FOLKS—a bright and distinct initiative in the world of journalism is to hit the stands soon. Founded by the biggest and brightest personalities from the journalistic fraternity, marketing, and designing, Folks has everything to carve a niche for itself. Our mission is not to be yet another newsmagazine. We want to do something that has never been tried before. We want to identify talents in every possible area and promote them.

FOLKS invite contributions from you on specified topics. The guidelines are outlined below. All submissions must be original works and those chosen for publication will be credited with a by-line. Authors of works selected for publication will be notified through e-mail only. We regret to inform you that calls regarding submissions will not be entertained and the decision taken by the editorial board will be final.

General Guidelines for Submission

All submissions have to be in Times New Roman font size 12 and must be Word files (.doc). Author details must include full name, college, and class/year. All photos submitted will have to be 600 kb or less in size.

For Short Stories: Your short stories can be fact or fiction, but you must mention which it is in your covering letter. The story should not exceed 2,000 words under any circumstance.

For Short Poems: Due to space limitations, we will be able to accept only narrative and lyric poetry, from among the various existing forms of poetry. Rhyming of the lines shall be of great importance and we request you to give it equal importance as the essence of the poem. Your poems should not exceed 400 words.

For Travelogues: Please write travelogues only on places you have seen and enjoyed personally. The destinations you write about should preferably be weekend trips or shorter visits from Mangalore. Ideally, a few photos with good resolution should accompany the article. Travelogues should have a maximum of 800 words.

For Photo Features:
Photo features are never complete without a theme. The photos have to be yours and not copied from somewhere else. Submissions in this category will need to be at least 10 photos with good resolution, accompanied by a description of about 300 words.

For Campus News: Campus news is not necessarily only events that occur within your college campus. It is also news about students, teachers, and other staff and their extraordinary achievements; for instance, if someone wins a fellowship, competition, or scholarship. These submissions will have to be accompanied by testimonials, and photos. The news item should be less than 400 words.

For Book Reviews: Books chosen for review should be apolitical and you must have read it in full. We are looking for reviews of novels, novellas, collections of short stories, management books, poetry collections, anthologies, historical works, philosophical writings, technological writings, and the like. A scanned picture of the book’s cover, the title in full, the price, number of pages, and ISBN, should accompany the review which should not exceed 1,000 words.

For Film Reviews:
Films reviews can be of national and international movies of all genres. Please mention the name of the movie, cast, director, producer, music director, and story line, along with your opinion and CBFC rating. We are looking for reviews of films that can be watched by all members of a family. A poster scan of the movie should accompany your review which should be limited to 1,000 words.

For Life Experiences, Anecdotes, and Relationships:
Preference will be given for personal, firsthand experiences which can be of interest to others. Positive experiences would be of the essence. The article should be less than 1,000 words and can be accompanied by photographs.

Conditions of Submission
•    You maintain ownership of the copyright on your work
•    A writer submitting a piece does so in agreement of the following terms between FOLKS and yourself, known henceforth as the Content Provider:

In submitting a piece for publication, the Content Provider grants to UPI and FOLKS a NON-EXCLUSIVE, worldwide, irrevocable, license to reproduce, archive, license, distribute, publicly display, publicly perform, create derivative works from, translate, or otherwise use the Content Provider’s content, or any portion thereof, for any purpose whatsoever, including without limitation licensing, distributing, or otherwise providing the content to Third Parties, in any and all mediums now known or developed in the future, in any language, anywhere in the world.

In granting FOLKS a non-exclusive license, the Content Provider does not relinquish copyright ownership of the content, and may sell or distribute it without restriction.
